With a January 20 SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE appearance and ROLLING STONE, ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY, BLENDER, ALTERNATIVE PRESS and REVOLVER's Best of 2006 lists under their belts, the members of AFI return to their natural element: the stage.
Though a considerably larger audience is now aware of the band through the #1 debut of DECEMBERUNDERGROUND last June and 2003's platinum Sing the Sorrow, the origins of AFI's intensely devoted core following can be traced back through years of hard touring. Emerging from the small northern California town of Ukiah in 1991, AFI swiftly built a following in the Bay Area that expanded to hundreds of thousands worldwide over the course of seven albums and hundreds upon hundreds of live shows.
The connection between AFI and its fans-many of whom belong to the fiercely loyal Despair Faction-in the live setting is absolute. As documented on the recent I Heard A Voice: Live From The Long Beach Arena DVD, every single audience member is as emotionally invested in the show as the band members themselves. And much like their recorded output, the unique AFI live ritual has captured the attention of the mainstream: THE LOS ANGELES TIMES' review of southern California radio giant KROQ's Christmas show gave AFI "the show's MVP award," while SPIN recently named AFI one of the current music world's "Greatest Live Bands."
