March and Speak out to get the State and Federal government to provide annual funding for NYC’s public Housing. Wednesday, May 16th –March to Washington
There is a plan for Public Housing to close the deficit, called The Moving to Work Plan. This plan will waive most rules and regulations that would protect residents. This plan would give Public Housing Authorities the ability to raise rents, demolish and sell public housing, and put time limits on our leases and just about anything they want to do. The plan to open Section 8 vouchers for apartments that are funded by City and State, does not tell you where you will live. This Section 8 plan pits us against fellow New Yorkers needing affordable housing.
The city stopped paying NYCHA in 2003, the state stopped paying NYCHA in 1997. We want NYCHA to recall from HUD those parts of the 2007 Plan that deprives you of your rights as residents, to have input and raise rents, charges for repairs, and sets limits in how long you may stay in your apartment. NYCHA and the government must commit to a real dialogue with resident groups now.
