Angels first sweep of NY Yankees since 04
Sunday, 27 May 2007
Pinch-hitter Erick Aybar's 11-pitch walk, forcing home the tying run, was the pivotal moment in the Angels' 4-3 victory over the Yankees on Sunday at Yankee Stadium, completing their first three-game sweep in New York since August 2004.

John Lackey ran his record to 8-3, yielding two runs in eight innings before turning it over to Francisco Rodriguez for save No. 16. In Joe Torre's 12 years at the Yankees' helm, the Angels are 31-23 in the Bronx (one loss at Shea Stadium) and 58-52 overall against the Yanks.

Chone Figgins followed Aybar's walk with another against Scott Proctor, who entered in relief of Mike Mussina with one out in the seventh inning trying to protect a 2-1 lead. Reggie Willits' sacrifice fly made it a three-run inning manufactured with one hit, Howie Kendrick's double, and four walks.

Mussina was on his game from the outset, striking out the first four Angels he faced. Kendrick's single in the second inning was the only Angels hit until Gary Matthews Jr. led off the fourth with a single, followed by Casey Kochman's seventh hit of the series. After Kendrick tapped into a double play, Mike Napoli slammed a two-out, two-strike RBI single to center.

The Yanks scored first in the second inning on Bobby Abreu's walk and steal, followed by an RBI single by catcher Wil Nieves, hitting .037 coming into the game. In the fourth, Robinson Cano doubled and scored on Nieves' single after Doug Mientkiewicz reached on what was ruled a hit batsman.
