Gary Sheffield's racially charged remarks Stir up Debate
Wednesday, 06 June 2007
Mets GM Omar Minaya wanted no part of commenting on Gary Sheffield's racially charged remarks in GQ."I have always been a big Gary Sheffield fan," Minaya said. "I am not going to comment."
Sheffield in part told the magazine: "What I called is that you're going to see more black faces, but there ain't no English going to be coming out. ... (It's about) being able to tell (Latin players) what to do - being able to control them."
Thirteen of the 25 players on the Mets' active roster were born in Spanish-speaking countries.
