NBA star Charlie Villanueva kicks off charitable auction
Thursday, 19 July 2007
Charlie Villanueva kicked off a charitable eBay auction dubbed, "Creo en una Cura" ("I believe in a cure"), to raise money for the National Alopecia Areata Foundation. The Milwaukee Bucks forward donated a personally autographed, three-foot bobble head doll to be auctioned off on eBay from July 9 to July 19.
Villanueva himself suffers from Alopecia Areata, a disease that causes the loss of hair throughout the body, especially the head. In severe cases, Alopecia Areata can cause hair loss all over the body. This disease is often associated with autoimmune deficiencies, and there is currently no known cure.
Although not terminal, the disease can lead to social isolation, especially in schools and the workplace. With this in mind, Charlie Villanueva created the Charlie Villanueva Foundation to create awareness of the effect bullying can have on, and help promote positive treatment for, those suffering from the disease.
Charlie Villanueva was born in Queens, New York to Dominican parents, showing off his basketball skills at an early age. He became widely known after he helped the University of Connecticut Huskies nab the 2004 NCAA Championship. He was selected as a first round NBA draft pick in 2005 by the Toronto Raptors and was one of the highlight rookies of that season. After this successful first season, he was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks.
