StrangleholdReviewed by: Mario Diaz Game Rating:
John Woo and Chow Yun Fat reunite for the first time since Hard Broiled, to bring Inspector Tequila’s style of street justice onto the video game screen. Inspector Tequila is back and ready to take down would be Cop killers, drug dealers and Russian Mafioso, get ready for massive shootouts and nifty action sequences and body counts to rival any game. It’s a shame that you can’t do many of the moves Tequila does on those cutscenes, where he’s flipping, diving around and basically kicking some ass with ease. Stranglehold is all about shooting people, preferable in the face or crotch area, if you do manage to waste all of your ammo, your then able to punch a bad guy and steal their weapon to further shoot people. The game is filled with many different types of weapons at your disposal, from shotguns, rocket launchers, to the many heavy automatic guns.
The game stands out with its feature ability “Tequila Time” which enables you to perform slow-motion Max Payne style move, to take out bad guys. You could go into it with just a press of a button, though the game will also go into it automatically if you dive, ride a food cart or stand on some surroundings while firing at someone. The story is pretty much straight forward, kill a bunch a people in some levels or blown eight of these in some levels to kill a strong boss. The environments are very responsive and interactive, shooting signs then watching it fall on enemies, to bring down small brides or wooden walkways all keep level from becoming boring or old.
The presents of John Woo is felt throughout the game, to the camera work, chorography, script and the rough characters. Gamers and fans of John Woo and Chow Yun Fat should defiantly give this game a try, its fun, fast paced and filled with action.
