NBA 08Reviewed by: Jason “Zenth” Betemit Game Rating:
NBA Live 08 feels and looks very good for a basketball game on the PSP, the gameplay will feel very familiar for fans of the series. Animations are fine, the shot mechanics in the game is excellent, though it will take some practice to master. Players must time their release just right when shooting, if you release the ball to early or hold on too long, the ball will turn red, meaning a bad shot is made, green is a perfect shot, as doing so will trigger a cash register sound effect, while orange is a good shot that might go in. NBA 08's answer of not having a second analog stick at its disposal is the square button, which does mostly everything that has to do with fancy dribbles and jukes.
The 3-point challenge mode in the game is a very difficult yet satisfying experience, it’s basically going against 8 or so rounds against random NBA players, the last opponent that you will face or at least I did was non-other then the 3-point legend himself Larry bird, the guy is a beast, he will own you every time you go up against him. You could basically expect him to drop 22 to 24 points each time, that’s what he’s done when I’ve faced him, which makes it extremely difficult when I really couldn’t find anyone whose equally as good, to match up against. The presentation in the game is great, it ultimately gets the job done, Instant replays are periodic enough that it doesn’t overwhelm you, the hardwood looks great, and sometimes you could see some nice reflections on the floor. The player models are decent enough that you can actually recognize many players. The audio is surprisingly good. Play-by-play man Ian Eagle is pretty good, as many east coast NBA fans might be familiar with him. A nice feature in the game is the conquest mode, in which you select an NBA team with the objective of trying to take over every city by defeating the team of that city. Each time you defeat a team, you'll control that team and can challenge other nearby cities. Wining over the entire map is extremely hard, because many remaining teams will try to pick off the weaker teams that you already beat. There are many things from players, bonus and more to unlock in this mode, ultimately the conquest mode in its entirely is pretty lengthy expect to play on for hours. NBA 08 is a great basketball game to have on the PSP, despite the fact that no franchise mode is available, there are enough mini games to hold you over.
