Interview with Royce Da 5' 9 -7.19.05
Sunday, 05 March 2006

Royce Da 5'9 released Death Is Certain last year which got great reviews from several media organiztions. I caught up with Royce and asked him about his now successful album 'Death Is Certain'.

SoHood.com: When did you fall in love with Hip-Hop?
Royce: I was always doing it like a hobby just freestyling and shit. But 95,' 96' is when I actually started writing rhymes, you know what I'm sayin'? And it's like 1997, the same night my son was born, I met [Hip-Hop] and then he was like 'We should do something.' And I've never looked back; it's been all Hip-Hop from there.

SoHood.com: Can you elaborate a little more cause when you say underground it doesn't have the say meaning as if in 94' 95'?
Royce:
When I say underground not having no regards to nothing like when you want it in your music you don't care about the feelings of radio you don't care about feelings of what's playing at the clubs. So I feel it came out real thoro, that darkness, cause that's how I was at that time not partying or nothing like that. I had a lot of stuff going on like beefs and different situations people not agreeing with a lot of people in our city and it just came out that way.

SoHood.com: You say that you don't listen to artists that don't influence you anymore. Who use to influence you?
Royce: I use to listen. I mean, I still listen to them like Eminem, Jay-Z, and Nas all the main emcees and everybody else. I still look up to those cats but I don't listen to their music. It's nothing that Eminem, Jay-Z, and Nas or none of them can say that's going to blow my  socks away  like 'Oh my  God, I can't believe he said that'.

SoHood.com: On Beef, what kind of mind set, did you have going into that track?
Royce: Beef was like the drums gave me a vibe that I can feel. I’m the type of person that only writes in the studio-- turn up the beat real loud you know what sayin’? And that’s the way, I was feeeling at the time and that’s what came out.
