Coming to Theaters March 14, 2008, is the action-packed new thriller
DOOMSDAY, from
writer/director Neil Marshall (
The Descent, Dog Soldiers); authorities brutally quarantine a country as it succumbs to fear and chaos when a virus strikes. The literal walling-off works for three decades--until the dreaded Reaper virus violently resurfaces in a major city.
An elite group of specialists, captained by Eden Sinclair (Rhona Mitra), is urgently dispatched into the still-quarantined country to retrieve a cure by any means necessary. Shut off from the rest of the world, the unit must battle through a landscape that has become a waking nightmare. The rest of the cast includes:
Bob Hoskins, Adrian Lester, Alexander Siddig and Malcolm McDowell.
So Hood Magazine SoHood.com: What made you want to make DOOMSDAY?
Neil Marshall: I wanted to branch out from horror, but not too far. I wanted to try something much bigger than I'd done before, and I wanted to pay homage to another of my favorite genres - the post apocalyptic action movie.
So Hood Magazine SoHood.com: What are your favorite aspects of Rhona Mitra's character Eden Sinclair in DOOMSDAY?
Neil Marshall: She's tough and resourceful. She's smart and uses her wits to get by as much as her fists, but when the need arises, she's very handy in a crisis. Beneath the surface lies a tortured soul in need of redemption and healing. She's not a robot. She's very human and frail with it. There's a lot more to her than first meets the eye, and this story represents her long journey home.
So Hood Magazine SoHood.com: Do you feel this is the most action-packed film that you've made to date?
Neil Marshall: Without a doubt. The first big action set-piece is 8 minutes long in itself. From hand to hand combat, to a chase and ending in a fierce street battle! In any other movie that would be the big finale. But in this, it's just a taste of what's to come.
So Hood Magazine SoHood.com: I heard rumors that you may be developing/directing a Sherlock Holmes feature?Neil Marshall: I'm no longer connected to that project.
So Hood Magazine SoHood.com: I loved THE DESCENT. Any plans for a sequel?
Neil Marshall: I believe a sequel is being developed but I have no direct involvement.
So Hood Magazine SoHood.com: What are some future projects you’re planning/working on?
Neil Marshall: I've got a few scripts in development, including a medieval heist movie called 'The Sword and the Fury', a World War II set action thriller called 'Eagles Nest' and an epic adventure based on the myth of the Roman army that marched into Scotland and disappeared without a trace, that's called 'The Ninth Legion'. I'd love to do Eagles Nest or Ninth Legion next, but we'll see.
