Written by Jerry Seinfeld and Spike Feresten, the movie tells the story of Barry Benson (Jerry Seinfeld) a bee that discovers that humans have been harvesting the honey that bees work hard all their lives to produce. With the help of Vanessa Bloome (Renée Zellweger), a human being whom he befriends after she saves him from being squished, he decides to sue the human race and claim back the ‘stolen’ honey. That is basically the main plot with a lot of typical Seinfeld type gags thrown in (wry observations and elaborate expositions of unusual situations), stuff you’ve probably seen on his sitcom TV series Seinfeld but with all new situations.
Led by Seinfeld and Zellweger, the cast seems to be having fun with the material. The dialogue zips along with a crackling pace and the jokes do fly fast and furiously with a hit rate that scores more often than fails. Bee Movie features the city of New York in glorious colors and spectacle as Barry zooms through the city. Central Park in particular is filled with colorful foliage that has a vibrancy, which just catches the eye.
The overall design of the cartoon complements the characters and the world they inhabit. From the world inside the hive to the Honey factory where the bees work, to the human world with the cars and buildings, everything works well together.
All in all, this is entertaining in the simple way it should be, a perfect little distraction to while a little time away. While it may have a little lesson about how important bees are to our environment, it is neither preachy like Happy Feet nor condescending, letting it all flow with the story rather than hammer it over our heads.
