Tha Art of DJing: DJ Felli Fel
-Q & A Interview by Mario Diaz, So Hood Magazine

Writer's Note: The following interview was conducted two years ago it was going to be printed in our Premiere Issue of So Hood Magazine but we decided to keep it in the vault until now.

Over 1.6 million listeners spend their evenings tuned into Power 106 in Los Angeles to hear DJ Felli Fel’s top-rated radio show. He also brings heat to Shade 45 with the newest music, exclusives and freestyles to get your Saturday nights poppin' 8 pm - 12 am ET. His mixing skills earned him the title "West Coast DJ of the Year" by the Mixshow Power Summit. He has also produced a remix of Tyrese's "I Like Dem Girls," "Worldwide" by The Outlawz featuring Tupac, and a remix of Jessica Simpson's "Take My Breath Away," among many other music and video projects.

SoHood.com: What are your thoughts on some up and coming West Coast artists like Crooked I and The Game?
Felli Fel:
I think The Game is good for the West Coast, I don't even know if Crooked I still doing things now. Game is definitely an anticipated dude out here, man. I think it's going to be good to see a young cat, the guy I think is only 21.

SoHood.com: What's are your opinion on the current state of the West Coast?
Felli Fel: You know, it's always been West Coast Hip-Hop. I think the problem is me and brother Kam, which is an old school OG. I don't know if you're familiar. Kam with the K, not to be mistaken at all with the other [Cam'Ron].

SoHood.com: Yeah, I'm familiar with him.
Felli Fel: Basically, we were having a conversation the other day, man. West Coast Hip-Hop has always been here. The problem is because of certain individuals that have, trying to think of the word, kind of intimidated certain record labels cats. It's these A & Rs cats need to start recognizing, man. Artists also need to realize as well that they got to start hustling on these mix tapes and they got to learn how to put they business together to get they material to these A & Rs and sit down with these guys, so they don't feel intimidated because for so, so, long, so many cats that you have intimidated these record labels. Some of these record labels you know are scared to sign these acts. So it's a combination of you know of record labels need to get over that shit. And these West Coast artist need to stop blaming Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre for not you know. Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre can't sign every artist. These guys have their own lives you really can't get mad at them for not stopping everything they got going on to help these individuals West Coast artists they had to work to get where they at. And these West Coast artists will have to do the same thing.

These record labels need to open their minds to these West Coast artists and quit being scare, because there's some talent out here. It's just a matter of time to signing the acts and not being scare to develop these artists. Every other artist is sign right now is a south artist. These southern artists getting deals left to fucking right and it's really frustrating.

SoHood.com: What do you think about Snoop Dogg and other artists from the West Coast saying they don't get played in the East Coast?
Felli Fel:
You got to remember being who I am and what I do being a DJ who breaks the music out here, it's frustrating for me when all these East Coast artist they come and they bug you and bug you about playing their record yet your guys on the side of town aren't playing our records and you know I got to ride for these cats out here, man. Because you what I'm sayin' this is where I'm at, it ain't where you from, it's where you at. These artists need to realize and it's not every artist, it's only particular artist you know what I'm sayin' that they cry when their record don't get played out here but what about all the artists out here that's not getting played in New York. That's really fucking frustrating not only for those artists but not only that they out here what they need to stop is getting on these East Coast guys records cause every time a East Coast artist calls and wants Nate Dogg to sing on the hook or want Snoop Dogg to be on their song or want Dr. Dre to produce a beat or whatever. Those guys need to stop doing that because until those guys stop singing on these guys' records and doing all these things for them it's not going to change. The East Coast guys and South guys are getting all the love now but you know what those are the guys that hustled and really can't be mad at them.

SoHood.com: Like the biggest thing on the West Coast use to be Death Row Records? In your opinion on them can they rise again?
Felli Fel:
I mean I think any company can rise again if they have good music period. If they got hot artists, hot tracks, if they got good music, I definitely think that it can happen.

SoHood.com: There have been some rumors I don't know if you heard of them about Death Row being blackballed.
Felli Fel:
Like I said I haven't heard of that, I just think if they had hot music again they're going to get played period. That goes for mix tapes, radio, clubs, I mean you can't deny a hot song period.
