Who could forget the great arcade smash, NBA Jam, who sent many kids crying back to their parents for more quarters. Fast–forward to the future, as Midway no longer makes NBA Jam but instead has released a new more stylish attempt called NBA Ballers: chosen One. It’s catered more to the urban fan as the soundtrack is headed by one of Hip-hop’s most famous music producers Just Blaze, whose sounds could be heard throughout the game, cut-scenes and as well as in the background while the game is in session.
NBA Ballers: Chosen One is hosted by Public Enemy's Chuck D who also does the play by play. Chuck D approach to the play by play is more of a street game announcer, something you’ll hear in the famous New York City's Basketball court Holcombe Rucker Park, it’s a perfect fit in this style of game, but one could only imagine if Marv Albert was chosen to host.
Basically, if you're not familiar with the ballers series, you can single-play games of 1V1, 2V2, and 1V1V1, or three-point contest. You can also play ranked and unranked matches online using your custom character, which is pretty cool. The Story mode is where the fun is at, it’s where you create a player, and choose from hundreds of different shirts, pants, shoes, jewelry items, and more to customize his appearance.
Just like MLB 08: The Show, your created player will be dreadful starting out, but in time his attributes will improve slightly after each game. Story mode's premise is simple. The story mode’s story is that the top players in the league take part in a street ball tournament, the winner will be crowned the NBA’s Chosen one, it’s that simple. Let’s not forget that you could take your created player online and ball too.
In total there are more than over 70 current NBA players that one could play, not to mention the legends as well, such as Wilt Chamberlain, Magic Johnson, Dr. J, Larry Bird, Bill Russell, it’s a shame that Michael Jordan is not included, but I guess that’s a different issue.
The basketball courts in the game are kept interesting by having them located in a number of attractive locations, you get your normal rooftop, an airplane hangar, some upscale penthouse, a lakefront, Beach, and the mountains of China.
NBA Ballers has this NBA Jam characteristic to it, meaning that any NBA player in the game can not only just dunk but also pull off spectacular moves, no matter of their height, build or skills they poses in real life.
The moves, style and announcing all give an impression that the game is more of an arcade basketball game then a realistic 5 on 5 NBA match. Everything is over the top, passing it to someone in the crowd, dribbling is outrageous
Sadly, the game only has two options in the pause menu, Quit and resume, No Replay feature, which is strange in a game with all the over the top dunks, you figure that you'lll want to see it more then once.
Everything you wanted or at least some of the features you wanted and the graphics and moves would leave you thinking the game is a no-brainer as far as being the best of the best in an arcade sports game, but for some strange reason, it feels as if there is something missing from really letting this game be truly a fan's favorite baller's game.
The Good: Great graphics and design. The roster of players, moves and overall style.
The Not So Good: The control system could have been tighter.
Purchase, Rent Or Just play In A Friends House: I’ll suggest to buy this title, it's a great acrade game to have when family or friends come over.
