Wednesday night was a step -- a step forward, not backward. The Mets watched John Maine pitch through pockets of trouble, they watched Jose Reyes hit a three-run homer to sink the Phillies, and they watched their own stock in the National League East rise yet again, into a tie of first place with the Phillies.
"Now, we're playing consistent baseball," Reyes said. "Earlier in the year, we didn't play that kind of baseball. So now we feel better."
That's why it was such a relief to see Reyes launch his home run over the right-center-field wall Wednesday night. He knew it right away, nearly sauntering down the first-base line, before breaking into a quick jog and thrusting his right index finger into the air.
He danced, he cheered and he smiled. And he felt guilty about none of it.
"When you hit a three-run home run," Reyes said, "you have to enjoy it."
