The Hollywood Reporter praises ‘Expendables 2′ for “the complexity of [the] stunts,” the “hardboiled action and wisecracking cast dynamics,” and the on-screen charisma of lead Sylvester Stallone.
That’s all well and good, says that Chicago Tribune, but the story might be better if it made any kind of sense! The Tribune’s review calls the movie a “‘Road Runner’ cartoon for the bloody-minded” that feels no need to “[explain] how this or that character shows up, how boats and planes magically appear, and how a plane crash into a mountain is supposed to be survivable.”
Variety agrees that the plot is pretty unbelievable, and also takes issue with its repetitive use of self-aware humor. In Variety‘s words, ‘The Expendables 2′ is a “muscle-bound meathead extravaganza… delivering the maximum firepower and zero brainpower its target audience expects.”
