Joe Mauer back with Twins next week?. Twins catcher Joe Mauer today will play in a simulated game in Fort Myers, Fla. It will be the start of his final phase of recovery from a sore sacroiliac joint, a phase that could have him in the lineup a week from Friday, when the Twins play host to Kansas City. — Minneapolis Star Tribune

Pedro Martinez working out, waiting for right offer. Pedro Martinez continues to work out and wait for the right offer from the right team so he can resume his career. The former Red Sox ace is waiting for teams to realize that he would be a better gamble than some of the low-cost wagers that have not panned out early on. “He’s working out, he feels great; he’s not in any hurry to make a decision,” said his agent, Fernando Cuza. “He’s waiting for the perfect opportunity and he’s glad he didn’t make a couple of early decisions that he could have made.” It is believed that Martinez is seeking a one-year deal with a base salary around $5 million, although Cuza refused to talk pricetag.  — Boston Herald

Yanks won’t send Wang to minors. Yankees manager Joe Girardi insisted Chien-Ming Wang was not hurt. He also said that because Wang was out of minor league options, there was no way to send him to the minors without giving other teams a chance to claim him. — NY Times
