The best way I could explain Prototype is that it’s Incredible Hulk, Spider-man, Venom and Wolverine mixed into one character, which leads to an awesome gaming experience. Is there nothing that Alex Mercer can’t do? Well, maybe shoot projectiles, but he can pick up weapons dropped by soldiers.

Prototype is an open world located in New York City, after an outbreak, the city is filled with zombie/mutant like people that got infected with a mysterious virus. The military is called in to take control of Manhattan before it gets overrun.

Alex is the character that you play as, he has superhuman strength, agility, and has an ability to transform/ship shift his body into a weapon, make his hands form a rock like shape, arms can swing around in a rope like form, cutting anything it touches. Also has the ability to run aside buildings and simply jump and glide off them smoothly to safety. You’re the ultimate weapon, as no enemies can keep up with you.

The combat is deep, as you have the ability to use experience points you gain with every kill, to upgrade your repertoire of moves. The controls are very simple, it’s effortless to execute powerful moves. Only drawback is remembering all of the types of moves to do. As the game progress, you’ll have the ability to hi-jack tanks and helicopters, which are easy to control and handle for the most part pretty even.

The graphics in the game are admirable, as its understandable that with so much going on that the developers had to make some compromising. Even with a vast amount of enemies, people, vehicles, the frame rate stays spot-on the whole time.

Traveling around New York City can be fun, and with 200 glowing orbs to collect, it’s a good incentive to explore every inch of New York. As you’ll notice in the map, there are two types of colors making up the map, the blue area is the military bases, that one can inflate to gain upgrades. Destroying the bases will for a short time disable the striking team. The red areas are the infect territories, where the infected hives are, and must be destroyed in order to minimize the amount of infected in the area. You’ll also noticed when you’ve stepped into an infect area, without looking at the map, simply cause the screen will turn slightly red.

The game could have used some more monster variation, as there is only a handful of different types of monsters, that you’ll regularly battle with. As you’ll see hundreds of civilians that have been infected, you never really have time to judge the different types of variations of people as they’ll easy to kill.

The game does a good job of making you feel invisible, but that doesn’t mean the game is easy, as you die a number of times, and on boss battle you may have to retreat in order to regenerate some health back. You’re also being hunted by both the mutants and the army, luckily you can consume anyone and in turn gain their appearance, the disguise aspect is great to use when you’re being hunted by the army or need to consume a solider in order to gain access to their base.
